What's up with You?
Arthur You was born and raised in Princeton Junction, New Jersey, and is currently attending University of Maryland, College Park, where he is pursuing a dual degree in Music Education and Computer Science.
Arthur also attended the Mannes Prep division in New York for 14 years- a music school pre-college program- starting from the age of 4, and ending with his high school graduation. While at Mannes, he privately studied piano and french horn, music theory, and orchestral/chamber classes. Recently, Arthur performed all of Chopin's Op. 10 Etudes and Liszt's Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2.
Arthur studied piano under the tutelage of Li-Chen Hwang for all of his 14 years at Mannes. He won his high school's concerto competition, placed First Place at Prima Volta's 2022 Music Competition, and won First Prize at Anselmo's 4th Music Competition. He is also a recipient of the Richard Shirk Scholarship from Mannes, and at UMD, was one of nine selected pianists to perform at Steinway Hall in New York.
Some of Arthur's hobbies include playing and programming video games, participating in Chinese lion dance, or listening to classical music. When listening to music, some of his favorite symphonies include Tchaikovsky's 6th Symphony and Rachmaninoff's 2nd Symphony. At UMD, he is an active member of Terp Lions, the university's lion dance team. And recently, he has gotten into outdoor photography, and enjoys a good outdoor shoot with his Sony A6400.
Arthur also enjoys lots of time with his household cat, Clay. He is a social, 14 year old Russian Siberian that loves to cuddle up to Arthur whenever he's at his desk. Clay loves spending time outdoors, watching the backyard and observing nature, but whenever he is inside he will gladly join the family at the dinner table or at the sofa for a movie.
Arthur looks forward to teaching at the Millpond academy, and is excited to meet all the pianists for the summer!
Plan for Future
Once Arthur graduates from UMD, he plans to work in the public school sector for a few years as a high school orchestra or band director, then pursue a graduate degree in Orchestral Conducting at Juilliard. Once he graduates, he plans to become a tenured professor at a music conservatory, and conduct student ensembles and orchestras until he retires.
